It was back in mid-2007 when a financial “mid-life crisis” hit me!
At the age of 50, both Susannah and I had accrued a hotch-potch of pension schemes, savings plans, ISA-style products and assurance policies but had not the slightest idea of how they had performed apart from an annual statement that was quickly filed away because I knew that I really should look at it but I was frightened about what I might find!

Browsing the Sunday Times in spring 2007 I spied an offer in the financial section for a free guide to Inheritance Tax planning from St James’ Place. Having done a quick bit of background my feeling was that SJP looked a bit up-market for the likes of us, but the tax guide was free so off went our details to the good folk of SeventySeven Wealth Management. The guide itself was instructive, but the clincher was a follow-up invitation to a lunch-time “seminar” run by Paul Luetchford at the Ringlestone Arms which is close to where we live. And that was it really!

Here was a man who was clearly steeped in his subject, could explain it in clear, logical terms without resorting to jargon or promised rates of return and was a contrarian to boot! Would I, could I, trust this man with our rag-bag of financial assets? Well, I decided that we could. SJP is founded solidly on their unique practise of picking & monitoring fund managers and so by the same token I reasoned that if Paul did his job well, we could concentrate on doing ours without dithering over savings and pensions.

The next step was an invitation to SeventySeven to lay bare our financial folly. Susannah and I were treated gently with only a few raised eyebrows. The plan to consolidate the All-Sorts was surprisingly straightforward and had a liberal dose of simple tax planning thrown in, something that was a complete novelty to us at that time.

It is an article of faith in our household that when big decisions are made, the very next day something goes awry! That something was the recent financial crisis which saw the FTSE 100 dip below 4000 in 2009, but curiously we felt more than ever that our decision to go with SJP was the right one. We saw valuations fall with the market but with calm consistent advice continued regular contributions that, with the subsequent recovery in the markets, revealed the truth of price-averaging over the long term! We cannot know exactly what would have become of our old portfolio, but we are certain it would be far below where we stand today.

So are we completely in the thrall of SJP? Well, no we are not and have a few SIPP plans on the side which contain some legacy shares for a bit of fun, but these are small. The truth is that SJP have made us think more clearly and carefully about the future and not just for ourselves but also for our children and for our parents who happily are still with us.

And so we are entering the next phase of our relationship with SJP. Retirement looms. Children flee the nest (and return!). Parents need more care and attention. Good financial plans are arguably even more important to us now in preparation for significant life changes and SJP are currently providing us with sound choices in terms of wills, estate planning and trusts. We particularly appreciate the role that SJP can play as a single point of contact and advice on all things financial when needed. Of course we understand that this very personal service has its price but we are certain that the benefits far outweigh the costs.

If this sounds like a scripted promotional piece, I make no apology because it is our real experience and I would be happy to recount it to anyone. There is however, one word of advice; don’t mention Premium Bonds to Paul….!

From the moment I walked through the doors of SeventySeven I felt more than a Client, I felt very lucky and special.

The welcome I receive from all SeventySeven colleagues each time I visit is genuine and friendly. Colleagues spend time getting to know and understand me, so the advice and guidance I receive is not just financially prudent but tailored to my own very personal and individual needs.

The expertise of SeventySeven is impeccable and colleagues have never rushed me into making an investment decision unless I feel absolutely comfortable. I am a perfectionist and a stickler for efficiency and SeventySeven do what they say they will do, if they say they will send me information, I receive it the next working day…impressive!

Recently I sent a long panicky email about my Pensions to SeventySeven because I knew they would give me honest advice, and that afternoon I received a call reassuring me and talking me through my worries and questions…the Pensions weren’t even invested with SJP…what a truly incredible service.

I have deliberately remained anonymous to protect my own privacy, but it is without hesitation I recommend SeventySeven unreservedly. SeventySeven is “cutting edge” …and I’ve tried quite a few Financial Advisers in my time!

I particularly value my regular 1:1 review meetings with my dedicated SeventySeven Adviser who is also frequently at the end of the telephone or email; but I also appreciate invitations to their seminars and workshops which keep me updated with latest legislation and generic investment advice - these are informative and helpful, the welcome I continue to receive is second to none, the efficiency of the whole team is flawless and the expertise is of the highest standard…

I feel safe, valued…and I suppose more importantly my investments are growing very healthily!

I know SeventySeven should be privileged to have me as a Client, but I actually feel very privileged to be supported and guided by SeventySeven.
